HC sees writ challenging legality of article 70 of constitution

A lawyer today filed a writ petition with the High Court challenging the legality of article 70 of the constitution.

According to the article, the office of a lawmaker becomes void once he resigns from his political party or votes against his party. But he will not be disqualified from contesting for the same office in the next election.

Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond filed the writ this morning, saying the article is undemocratic and goes against the values of constitutional democracy.

Secretaries to cabinet division, parliament secretariat and law ministry were made respondents in the writ.
