Police suspend ‘Operation Maximus’ in Moulvibazar

The members of law-enforcement agencies this evening suspended the anti-militancy drive named ‘Operation Maximus’ at Borohat militants den that left a police personnel injured.

"We have to suspend the drive due to inclement weather . . . Fresh drive will start from early morning tomorrow," Chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTCU) Monirul Islam told journalists.

He added: `We have a message that militants stored bombs and many explosives inside Borohat hideout."

Police and witnesses said the anti-militant drive at a one-storey building near Abu Shah Dakhil Madrasa at Borohat began at 8am today with participation of SWAT and bomb-disposal teams.

Earlier police cordoned off the house since Tuesday night, said Moulvibazar police OC Aukhil Uddin.

"Sounds of explosion and gunfire were heard after the operation began at about 12 am. Smoke was also seen coming out of the building following the sound of a loud explosion," the OC said adding, "A district police constable was injured."

Law-enforcement personnel conducted a similar raid at Nasirpur militant hideout from where bodies of four children, two women and a youth were found Tuesday night.

The bodies were kept at Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital. Their identities could not be ascertained till the filing of the report at 8:19 pm today.
