Call for unity of pro-liberation forces to combat militancy
Speakers at a discussion in the city today called for united efforts by the pro-liberation forces to combat communalism and militancy in the country.
Civil society members, freedom fighters, professionals and senior journalists took part in the discussion at the Jatiya Press Club.
“We shouldn`t be complacent with the nationwide successful drives by the lawmen to curb militancy. All pro-liberation forces must forge unity to fight militancy and communalism,” noted journalist Abed Khan, convener of a platform against communalism and militancy, told the meeting.
In his presidential speech, Abed Khan apprehended that the country`s independence and sovereignty would be at stake, if the anti-liberation forces return to the state power by any means.
Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Chairman Major General (Retd) Helal Morshed Khan, Jatiya Press Club (JPC) President M Shafiqur Rahman, Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Oikya Parishad General Secretary Rana Das Gupta, noted cultural personality Pijush Bandyapadhyay, daily Bhorer Kagoj Editor and JPC Executive Committee Member Shyamol Datta and Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) leader Syed Ishtiak Reza took part in the discussion, among others.
Muktijoddha Sangsad Chairman Helal Morshed called upon the pro-liberation forces to work together to avert defeats like the one in Comilla City Corporation election.
JPC President Shafiqur Rahman underscored the need for introducing a uniform education system to ensure a militant-free Bangladesh.
Journalist Shyamol Datta said the unity of the forces who believe in the spirit of the Liberation War must forge unity to face the country`s current crises.
Syed Ishtiak Reza said pro-liberation forces must take lessons from the defeat in Comilla polls. Otherwise all will have to pay in the days ahead, he added.
