Journo Aftab murder: 5 get death penalty

A Dhaka court sentenced five people to death in a case filed for the murder of Ehushe Padak winning Photojournalist Aftab Ahmed.

Judge Abdur Rahman Sarder of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 passed the order on Tuesday.

The convicted are Humayun Kabir, Habib Hawlader, Billal Hossain, Raju Munshi and Md Rasel.

Of them, Rasel and Raju have been absconding since the case was filed, while Sabuj is out on bail, and the rest are currently in jail.

According to the case details, on December 25, 2013, veteran photojournalist Aftab Ahmed, 80, was killed at his Wapda Road house in Rampura, Dhaka. A case was filed with Rampura police station accusing unnamed persons.

In his illustrious career, Aftab worked for the Daily Ittefaq for long.

He captured some images of the 1971 Liberation War and Bangabandhu Sheikh Majibur Rahman.

Ahmed was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2006. On December 16, 2010, miscreants took away his award and other valuables from his house.
