Farmers to get weather forecast updates on time

The government has taken a large project in order to strengthen country’s weather forecasting system and this will help farmers to get latest weather update from the metrological department, Met office officials said.

A total of 487 upazilas will be covered with modern tools in first phase of this project, according to the officials.

Under this project, modern tools and technological instrument have already been set up at Metrological department headquarters and its branch offices. Besides, several districts of the country like Netrokona, Sunamganj, Rajshahi and Naogaon will be covered with alarming device to get cyclone message from the met department immediately.

Samsuddin Ahmed, Director of Metrological Department, informed that recently the project got final approval.

He said that in the initial stage, they have decided to set up devices at least 200 upazilas in the country.

“The execution process is underway,” he said.

“This is important. If the people get right signal at the right time, it will be possible to reduce damages in a great margin,” he added.

It was learnt that, the estimated project cost is Tk980 crore. Government will pay Tk 92 crore while World Bank will bear 888 core.

Bangladesh is considered as one of the worst affected countries caused by climate change. The country has been experiencing natural disasters on a regular basis.
