100-year mega plan for water
Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries due to climate change and it’s affected by natural disasters like flood, drought, cyclone, salinity and scarcity of potable water.
Water crisis in the country is growing up day by day as India have taken some projects to use water from international rivers unilaterally.
Considering the situation, the government of Bangladesh has taken 100-year mega plan to ensure potable water and ease the risk of climate change.
General Economic Department (GED) of Planning Ministry is working to formulate the plan “Bangladesh Delta Plan-2100” with assistance from Netherlands. The European country will provide financial grant under an agreement signed between the countries.
Mentioning different ministries and divisions will be involved to implement the delta plan GED member (Senior Secretary) Dr. Shamsul Alom said, “A commission will be formed after making law as it is impossible for a single ministry or division to coordinate or monitor the implementation process.”
Bangladesh will form a delta commission following the model of Netherlands’ delta commission, said the bureaucrat.
Executive Committee of National Economic Council gave approval a project to make the mega plan in December, 2013.
The estimate cost of Delta plan will be Tk. 85,64,68,000 while Netherlands will provide Tk. 76,47,12,000, said the department sources.
