Army to be deployed if necessary: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda said army will be deployed if there is any necessary in the upcoming Comilla City Corporation and two by-elections- Gaibandha -1 and Sunamganj-2.

The newly appointed CEC made the remark while answering questions to journalists following a meeting with members of law enforcement agencies on Thursday at the election commission conference room at Agargaon in the capital.

Huda, however, said that the commission has no plans to deploy army at this moment in those areas.

“But the arm forces will remain standby. They will be deployed immediately when there is a need,” he said.

He also said that strict punitive actions will be taken if any concerned official including law enforcement forces fail to do their duties.

When asked, CEC said that members of law enforces gave assurance to hold a free, fair and credible elections in a peaceful manner.
