90 percent migration seekers victims of corruption in 2016: TIB

Around 90 percent migration seekers fell victim of corruptions in different stages on their way to the destination countries in 2016, a Transparency International Bangladesh report claimed.

The report said that migrant workers had to pay bribe in the government selection process mechanism.

The report titled “Good governance in labour migration process: Problem and way out” also said that a total of 5,234 crore Tk has been illegally laundered by hundi to collect visa for the migrant workers in 2016.

The graft watchdog released the report at its headquarters in the capital’s Dhanmondi on Thursday.

Speaking at the programme, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman stressed good governance in overseas labor migration process.

“This is the biggest earner of foreign currency in Bangladesh. Government should immediately take initiatives to protect migration seekers from corruption. The sector should be free from broker, irregularities, forgery. Establishing good governance in the sector is a challenge for the government,” he said.

TIB program Manager (research and policy) Mnzur-E-Khoda and senior program manager Shazada- M Akram presented the report in the event.
