Govt to build 400 “Mujib Kella”

The government will build a total of 400 “Mujib Fort” (Shelters) in coastal and flood prone area across the country, said Disaster Management & Relief secretary Shah Kamal.

He made the announcement while speaking at a press briefing at the conference centre of the ministry on Thursday. The briefing was held on the occasion of observation of National Disaster Preparedness Day on March 10.

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya and Disaster Management Department Director General (DG) Riaz Ahmed, among others, were present there.

The secretary said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took Cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP) in July, 1973 and 199 mounds were built in 19 districts for shelter under the programme.

“The people called the shelters ‘Mujib Kella’ (Mujib Fort),” said the bureaucrat.

“The ministry has taken a project as per direction of incumbent Prime Minister and 400 modern ‘Mujib Kella’ will be built in 40 districts under the project,” he added.
