Bangladesh to be poverty free by 2030: Muhith

Finance Minister AMA Muhith today expressed the hope that Bangladesh would be free from overall poverty by 2030 as the present government is implementing various mega projects side by side with other development activities in all sectors.

“The extreme poverty is expected to be eliminated by 2024 as we are running various activities towards that end. We are giving importance on this sector as a priority one,” he said while addressing as the chief guest an inaugural ceremony of the loan management system of the Social Development Foundation (SDF) at Agargaon in the city.

The minister, however, said microcredit is playing a vital role to eliminate poverty from the country through providing credit to the extreme poor people. Many organisations and Non Government Organisations (NGOs) are giving credit to the extreme poor, he said adding, the microcredit activities is playing an important role to bring down poverty rate.

Secretary of the Bank and Financial Institutions Division M Eunusur Rahman and World Bank Country Director Qimiao Fan were present as special guests. SDF Chairperson MI Chowdhury presided over the function.
