PM to open country’s first air-conditioned warehouse tomorrow

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to inaugurate the country’s first-ever multistoried air-conditioned warehouse (silo) at Shantahar in Bogra on Sunday.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will open the 25,000-MT capacity specialized warehouse constructed at Shantahar Silo here through a function at 12.10noon on Sunday,” officials said.

Project Director and Warehouse Project Engineer Golam Mostafa told BSS that all kinds of food grains could be preserved at the warehouse built at a cost of Taka 300 crore.

He, however, said a decision has been taken for time being to stock rice at the warehouse as the quality of rice would remain better in it.

Engineer Mostafa said the warehouse that was constructed with the financial assistance of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) would be completely run by solar power.

“For this, more than 100 solar panels have been installed on the rooftop of the warehouse, and 360 kilowatt electricity is being supplied from the solar panels,” he said.

Engineer Mostafa further said the demand for power of entire Shantahar Silo could be fulfilled through the electricity produced from the solar panels.

The construction of the 60-feet high warehouse started in 2013. The 25,000-MT Shantahar Silo was constructed in 1969 for preserving wheat.
