Bangladeshi jailed for 12 years in Malaysia
A 38-year-old Bangladeshi hotel housekeeping worker was sentenced to 12 years’ jail and five strokes of the rotan by a Sessions Court here for raping his colleague in a workplace storeroom last year.
Md Alamgir Abdul Latif pleaded guilty to committing the offence on the 26-year-old woman at 11.30pm on Nov 5 last year at a hotel in Bukit Jambul.
Md Alamgir had initially claimed trial to the offence when he was charged on Nov 14. However, he changed his plea in court yesterday.
The offence comes under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code. It carries a maximum jail sentence of 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Lim Saw Sim said that the victim was pulled into the storeroom by the accused.
The incident, Lim added, had traumatised the victim.
She pressed for an appropriate punishment to be meted out as a deterrent. Md Alamgir, who was unrepresented, asked for a lenient sentence.
Sessions judge Irwan Suainbon ordered the sentence to run from Md Alamgir’s date of arrest on Nov 7.
