Writ challenges ECs appointment legality

A writ petition was filed with the High Court (HC) on Sunday challenging the legality of the appointment of the five-member Election Commission led by KM Nurul Huda.

Younus Ali Akond, lawyer of the Supreme Court filed the writ petition to the HC division concern.

It is completely violation of article 5(1), 1974 to reappoint retired government officials, according to the petition.

It is mentionable that, President Abdul Hamid appointed chief election commissioner on February 6 in line with a constitutional provision, according to a gazette notification issued.

The president also appointed four election commissioners who include one woman for the first time.
