New CEC Nurul Huda: At a glance

President Md Abdul Hamid formed new election commission, which will oversee next parliamentary elections scheduled for 2019. Former bureaucrat Khan Mohammad Nurul Huda has been named the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). Here is the brief biography the new CEC.

Birth: Nurul Huda was born in 1948 in Bauphal upazila under Patuakhali district.

Education: He completed his schooling in Patuakhali and obtained graduation and post graduation degrees in Statistics from University of Dhaka.

He was residential student of Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall and served as the cultural secretary of the hall Chhatra Sangsad in 1972-73.

He also studied Public Administration and Advanced Studies at the University of Manchester.

Participation in the Liberation War: Nurul Huda participated in the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971. He fought under Commander Major Jalil in sector-9.

Career: He joined the Bangladesh Civil Service in the administration cadre in July 1973.

He was deputy commissioner of Comilla and Faridpur, and the chief executive of Dhaka City Corporation.

He served as joint secretary and additional secretary to the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Parliament Secretariat, respectively.

He was sent to forced retirement in 2006 after being made officer on special duty for a long time during the BNP-Jamaat government.

He fought a legal battle against the then government`s move. But by the time he got a verdict in his favour in 2008.

He was made secretary with retrospective effect after the AL came to power in 2009.

Nurul Huda served as director (administration and human resources) at Gemcon Ltd, a multisectoral private company. He also worked as chairman of North West Zone Power Distribution Company Ltd.

Lastly, he served as managing director of Bangladesh Municipal Development Fund and retired from the job in 2015.

Family: He married Hussne Ara. They are blessed with one son and two daughters.
