Suranjit Sengupta: At a glance
Suranjit Sengupta was a prominent politician in Bangladesh and the Member of Parliament from Sunamganj-2 constituency. The veteran politician died on Monday at the age of 72. Here is his biography in a nut shell.
Birth: Suranjit Sengupta was born on May 5 in 1945 in Derai Upazila of Sunamganj District. His father’s name is Devendra Nath Sengupta and mother’s name is Sumati Bala Sengupta.
Education: He obtained graduation and post graduation degrees from University of Dhaka. He also received LLB degree from Central Law College.
Profession: The politician started his career as a lawyer.
Political career: Suranjit Sengupta was involved in politics in his student life. He started his political career with leftist parties.
In 1970’s National Election of Pakistan, he was elected from the Sylhet District as a candidate of the National Awami Party in the Provincial Assembly.
He was one of the members of Constitution Drafting Committee in 1972 and also served as the co-chairman of the parliamentary panel on the 15th Amendment during the Ninth National Parliament.
He joined and led the Ekota Party. He floated the Awami League in the early 1990s and was a member of the party’s advisory council.
Suranjit was elected as members of the parliament in second, third, fifth, seventh and eighth, ninth and 10th Jatiya Sangsad.
He was the prime minister’s parliamentary affairs adviser in the seventh Jatiya Sangsad. He took charge as Railway Minister in 2011 but resigned from his post due to bribery scams.
The politician served as the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry.
