Veteran politician Suranjit Sengupta dies

Suranjit Sengupta, a veteran politician and lawmaker of ruling Awami League, died at Labaid hospital in the capital early Sunday.

The former minister had been on life support at the Hospital. He breathed his last around 4am, Saifur Rahman Lenin, Assistant General Manager (corporate communications department) of the hospital, told Jagonews24.com.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed deep shock at the death.

He was the AL lawmaker from Sunamganj-2 constituency and a member of the party’s advisory council. Also, he was the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the law, justice and parliamentary affairs ministry.

He became the railway minister when the Awami League returned to power in 2008.
