ICT-1 seeks explanation from police over trial against deceased

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on Tuesday sought explanations from Inspector General of Police and superintendant of Mymensingh police over the agency`s “grave negligence” as it did not inform the tribunal about death of a fugitive accused.

“The tribunal also asked the Mymensingh SP to appear before the court on February 16 and submit his explanation in writing,” senior prosecutor Hrishikesh Saha told BSS.

The two-member tribunal headed by Justice Md Shahinur Islam passed the order accepting a plea from the prosecution.

Today the tribunal submitted a petition, pleading to frame the charges in the case afresh. The prosecution also pleaded to summon IGP, SP and officer in-charge of Phulbaria Police Station to explain their position for their negligence.

Earlier on January 12, the tribunal expressed its discontent over continuing trial proceedings against Md Waz Uddin of Mymensingh even after his death and asked to investigate to find out the culprits behind the blunder.

The tribunal on December 11, 2016, framed five charges of crimes against humanity against Waz Uddin and his partner in crimes Reaz Uddin Fakir. But Waz Uddin actually died on May 7, 2016, seven months before the indictment.
