Search committee asks to propose five names

The newly formed search committee has asked 31 political parties to propose five names by January 31 to form Election Commission.

Each party is requested to submit the names of chief election commissioner and other commissioners to the additional secretary (Administration) of the Cabinet division, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam briefed journalists after the first meeting of the search committee at the Supreme Court Judges’ Lounge on Saturday.

He also said that the search committee would meet 12 eminent personalities on Monday in purpose of forming Election Commission.

The eminent personalities are - former justice Abdur Rashid, former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University Dr AK Azad Chowdhury, Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University SMA Fayez, former advisor of caretaker government Sultana Kamal, former chief election commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda, former election commissioner Sahul Hossain, former election commissioner Brigadier (Rtd) Sakhawat Hossain, local government expert Dr Tofayal Ahmed, election expert Dr Badiul Alam Mazumdar, Dhaka University professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haq and former IGP Nurul Huda.

The search committee will hold the next meeting on Tuesday, said Cabinet Secretary.

The president formed the search body on January 25 after holding series of talks with 31 registered political parties including BNP and ruling Awami League.
