Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day today
The historic Homecoming Day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is being observed across the country on Tuesday in a befitting manner.
Like every year, Awami League centrally will hold a number of programmes in the capital, including an afternoon rally at Suhrawardy Udyan.
On this day in 1972, Bangabandhu returned to an independent Bangladesh via London and New Delhi after 290 days in captivity in Pakistan jail. People in droves came out to accord him a hearty welcome when he arrived at Tejgaon Airport from New Delhi by a British Airways flight at 1:41pm.
From airport Bangabandhu was moved to the Racecourse Maidan (now Suhrawardy udayan) where he addressed a spontaneous reception accorded to him by the cheerful countrymen believed to be one million.
He recalled with respect the contribution of all during the war and urged the people to rebuild the war-ravaged country. Bangabandhu took oath of office as the country`s Prime Minister on January 12, 1972.
