Anti-liberation forces behind Liton`s assassination: Nanok

Awami League Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanok, MP, has blamed the anti-liberation Jamaat-Shibir for assassination of Gaibandha-1 constituency lawmaker Manzurul Islam Liton.

"Jamaat-Shibir forces have assassinated Liton in a pre-planned way to weaken AL and other pro-liberation forces," Nanok told newsmen during his visit to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) in the city today.

Nanok, along with AL Organising Secretary of Rangpur division BM Mozammel Haque, MP, visited RMCH to see the body of Liton there.

Nanok said that the area of Liton was a stronghold of the anti-liberation Jamaat-Shibir militants in the past.

"Liton became very popular in the area and was elected with overwhelming majority in the last parliamentary elections by defeating the Jamaat-Shibir forces," he said.

According to police sources, Liton was critically injured as some unidentified miscreants opened gunfire at him at his home in village Bamondanga under Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha district at around 6 pm on Saturday.

The attending doctors declared him dead at 7:30 pm on Saturday as he was rushed to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) with bullet wounds.

A three-member team, headed by Head of the Department of Forensic of RMCH Professor Dr Narayan Chandra Saha, conducted autopsy of Liton`s body at the RMCH morgue this morning.

"We found five bullet wounds, including two in the chest," Dr Saha said, adding that excessive bleeding caused his death.

DIG of Rangpur Range Khondker Golam Faruk said that investigation is being conducted considering all possible corners of the assassination.

Commander of RAB-13 Battalion ATM Atikullah said that the criminals behind the assassination of Liton would be brought to book at the earliest.
