8 robbers killed in Narayanganj
At least eight suspected robbers were killed and four others injured in a mass beating at Araihazar upazila in Narayanganj early Thursday.
Of the deceased, five were so far identifies as Rony alias Ghathon, 40, a truck driver of Sonagazi in Feni, Rubel, 24, Shawkat, 32, and Titu, 30, of Mymensing and Rana, 30.
"Seven dacoits have been killed on the spot and five others injured in mass beating at Purinda Bazar under Araihazar Police Station around 4 am as a gang of robbers made an attempt to loot sacks of rice from a godown of one Abul," assistant police super (circle Kha) of Narayanganj Zohirul Islam told BSS this morning.
One more robber later died at the hospital, he said. Bodies of the robbers were sent to the morgue of Narayanganj General Hospital for autopsy.
A case was lodged to this end.
"A gang of dacoits went to Purinda Bazar by a truck and entered the bazar after saying that they came here with rice for Bhai Bhai Store," security guard Mokbul Hossain of Purinda Bazar told this correspondent.
"Soon after entering the bazar, the dacoits tied my hands and legs and also of another security guard Motaleb Mia and made hostage three other security guards in another part of the bazar," he also said.
"I managed to flee and informed Bachchu Mia, general secretary of the bazar committee of the matter and announced it through mike of the local mosque," he said adding that hundreds of local people rushed to the spot and caught them after a brief chase and beat them.
"We recovered three bodies while fire brigade personnel recovered four more bodies from a nearby pond while five others rescued in critical condition and sent to Araihazar Thana Health Complex for treatment," Inspector (investigation) Ariful Huq of Araihazar Police Station told.
One more dacoit later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
He suspected that some of the robbers jumped to a nearby pond to escape the mass beating.
