AL nominates candidates for district council elections

The ruling Awami League (AL) announced the names of its 61 district council chairman candidate on Friday.

The party’s General Secretary, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, Obaidul Quader announced the candidate names after a meeting of the party’s local government nomination board.

AL’s local government election nomination board finalised the names of the candidates at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Ganabhaban.

A total of 701 aspirants submitted their nomination forms to secure candidacy for the polls in 61 District Councils.

On November 20, the Election Commission (EC) announced the schedule for the first ever elections to district councils will be held on December 28.

In December 2011, the AL government appointed 61 administrators, mostly top leaders of the ruling party’s district units, to as many district councils.
