Nizami`s appeal hearing adjourned till Wednesday

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday continued hearing on a plea of Jamaat ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami, challenging the death sentence given to him by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1.

At the end of the day`s proceedings, the Apex Court adjourned the hearing till Wednesday.

Advocate SM Shahjahan today took part in the hearing for Nizami for the fourth day, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and his deputy Ekramul Haque Tutul were present on behalf of the state.

The ICT-1 on October 29, 2014, sentenced the Jamaat chief to death as the 72-year-old convict was found guilty in eight of the total 16 charges.

While delivering the verdict, the tribunal noted that the crimes he had committed intended to "demean the human civilization".

"No punishment other than death (for Nizami) will be equal to the horrendous crimes for which the accused has been found guilty beyond reasonable doubt," the verdict said.

The Jamaat chief lodged appeal against the ICT-1 verdict on November 23, 2014.

Police arrested Nizami on June 29 in 2010 in a criminal case and was shown arrested on war crimes charges on August 2, 2010.
