Jamdani becomes Bangladesh’s first GI product

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu handed over the GI registration certificate of Jamdani to Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) chairman Mustaq Hassan Md Iftekhar on Thursday.

Jamdani, the classic Muslin craft, has got the registration as the Geographical Indication (GI) product and this is the first GI product of Bangladesh.

Speaking at the certificate giving ceremony held at the secretariat, industries minister said that with this GI registration, Bangladesh has stepped forward to protect the rights on traditional and national products. Amu said all other national products including Hilsa would also be given the GI registration in phases.

From now on, weavers can apply to the DPDT to use the GI logo while marketing Jamdani products including famous Jamdani Saari both locally and internationally.

Business people said that with the GI registration, the country will be able to protect better the origin of Jamdani and rights on these products.

GI is a name or sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin such as a town, region, or a country.
