4 detained in Rangpur militant den raid

Police detained four members of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) when they were holding a secret meeting at Shahbajpur area in Rangpur early Sunday.

The detainees are Belal Hossain, 46, son of late Joynuddin, Ershad Alam, 28, son of Habibar Rahman, Ashraful Islam, 23, son of Montajur Rahman and Al Amin, 20, son of Ismail Hossain. All of them are from Pirgachha upazila of the district.

According to police, acting on a tip-off, police cordoned off a brick field in the area and conducted a raid to detain the JMB members.

Sensing the presence of police, the militants hurled a few cocktails targeting the police. Four police were injured in the incident.

In reply, police opened fire at the militants. Later, four of the militants were detained from the spot.

Confirming the matter, Ataur Rahman, Assistant Superintendent of Police, said, the detainees are being interrogated. Police recovered a homemade pistol, two machetes, a Chinese axe and three cocktails from the spot, he added.
