Experts demand new law for EC appointment
Members of civil society have urged the government to formulate new law to appoint Election commissioner in line with constitution.
Speakers of Sushashaner Jonno Nagorik (SHUJAN) made this call at a round-table discussion held Saturday at the capital’s National Press Club.
SHUJAN secretary Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar said a proper institution is essential to conduct fair, impartial and acceptable election.
For this purpose, in the constitution article no. 118 has a direction to appoint election commissioner according to laws. But in the last 44 years, the direction has not been followed.
The appointment of election commission may be questionable if they are appointed without formulation laws as per constitution, he added.
Former vice chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Emaz Uddin Ahmad, former election commissioner Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, former election commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda and columnist Syed Abul Maksud also speaks among others.
