SC scarps Mamun’s acquittal in graft case
The Appellate Division of Supreme Court (SC) on Sunday cancelled the High Court verdict that acquitted businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun on charges of acquiring wealth beyond his known sources of income.
A four-member bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order after hearing of the leave to appeal plea by the Anti-Corruption Commission. The SC also ordered further hearing of the case, said Khurshid Alam, lawyer of ACC.
On October 27, 2008, the Special Judge’s Court had sentenced Mamun to 10 years’ imprisonment and fined Tk 10 lakh for accumulating property worth Tk 101.73 crore beyond his known source of income.
In response to an appeal, the HC on July 30, 2012 acquitted Mamun from the corruption charges.
Later on December 4, 2012, the ACC filed a leave to appeal with the SC.
