Bangladesh designer Bibi Russell opens India Runway Week

Just when you find yourself wondering if diversity on the Indian ramp could ever be Indian fashion’s forte, in comes a show to throw all your doubts out of the window.

The first day of India Runway Week in Delhi saw an unusual, welcome opening show. It was a showcase by none other than Bangladesh-based designer Bibi Russell, followed by a show by Daniel Syiem from Meghalaya.

Kudos to the fashion gala for making a statement with this opening show. Indian textiles and heritage are taking forefront at major fashion weeks in the country.

The recently concluded Lakme Fashion Week was testimony to that. Keeping in sync with the trend, the India Runway Week opened with a show dedicated to Khadi and other handlooms.

Russell, after giving a major makeover to the Rajasthan government textile division, under the name of Rajasthali by Bibi Rusell, showcased her first collection under this label.

There were silhouettes in colours ranging from subtle to bright shades in signature Russell style. Syiem, on the other hand, showcased designs that reflected his love for ethnic outfits with drama in terms of cuts.

The move to embrace different takes on Indian fashion is a welcome one, to say the least. And it’s here to stay, we hope.
