India-Bangladesh good ties crucial for both nations: Indian army chief
Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi speaks at the Annual Media Address on Monday

Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi emphasised that fostering good relations between India and Bangladesh is crucial for both nations, dismissing animosity as counterproductive.

“We are neighbours. We have to live together, understand each other, and any kind of animosity is not in each other’s interest,” General Dwivedi stated during the Annual Media Address on Monday, ahead of India’s Army Day.

Citing a recent remark by the Bangladeshi army chief, he added, “Bangladesh has recognized India’s strategic importance, and the same is true for us. Bangladesh is strategically important to India as well.”

Border Cooperation and Current Relations

General Dwivedi noted the geographical proximity shared by the two nations, with most of Bangladesh’s border adjoining India, apart from a small segment in the southeast with Myanmar.

“There is no current vulnerability from either side,” he asserted. “I have maintained regular communication with the Bangladeshi army chief, including during his transition into office. We also held a video conference on November 24.”

He confirmed ongoing military cooperation between the two countries, including officer exchanges for the National Defence College (NDC). However, joint military exercises have been temporarily postponed due to current circumstances.

“We will resume these exercises once the situation improves,” he assured.

General Dwivedi stressed the importance of keeping discussions about broader bilateral relations reserved until an elected government is in place in Bangladesh.

“As of now, the relationship with the military remains strong and stable,” he reiterated.

This statement comes amidst heightened tensions between India and Bangladesh following the student-led mass uprising that led to the ousting of Sheikh Hasina on August 5.

Recent disputes over border issues, including allegations of barbed-wire fencing construction by India, have further strained ties between the two countries.

General Dwivedi’s remarks highlight the necessity of maintaining a constructive and collaborative relationship between the neighbouring nations, despite the challenges.
