2 HMPV cases detected in India

Two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported in Bengaluru, India, involving a 3-month-old baby who has been discharged and an 8-month-old who is still recovering.

These are the first reported cases of HMPV in India, reports NDTV.

The infected infants and their families have no recent travel history, ruling out exposure from other regions or countries.

In response to these developments, Bangladesh’s health authorities are yet to take any visible measure in such situation, particularly given the potential for cross-border respiratory illnesses.

Mo cases of HMPV have been reported in Bangladesh so far.

Understanding HMPV

HMPV is a respiratory virus that often causes mild symptoms resembling the common cold but can lead to serious complications in vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. In severe cases, the virus can trigger pneumonia or worsen chronic respiratory conditions. Cases of HMPV tend to increase during winter and early spring.

Global context and surveillance efforts

The virus is already in circulation globally, and respiratory illnesses associated with HMPV have been reported in various countries, including India. As part of its global surveillance efforts, Bangladesh works closely with organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) to track respiratory illnesses like influenza, RSV, and HMPV.

No unusual surge detected in Bangladesh

While there has been an increase in respiratory illnesses in China and a few cases in India, surveillance data from Bangladesh has not indicated any unusual rise in respiratory infections. However, the government remains cautious and is increasing laboratory capacity to test for HMPV and other emerging viruses.
