BJP's record win in Gujarat, Congress bags Himachal
India's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has swept the 2022 Gujarat assembly election by winning in 139 seats and leading in 17 constituencies, and is looking set to break its own record of 149 seats in 1985 assembly polls. Congress, meanwhile, has been able wrest back Himachal Pradesh following a close contest with BJP, which was hoping to buck the trend in the hill state.
While Congress has been able to retain its position as the principal opposition notwithstanding of a disastrous performance. As per the latest trend, Congress may get restricted on 17 seats, less than one-tenth of the assembly strength.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ran an aggressive campaign to make inroads in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state but failed to make a significant impact in terms of seat share. Arvind Kejriwal's party, however, has received nearly 13% of the total votes polled and is on its way to get the status of a national party.
