India sees biggest single-day spike with nearly 3.8 lakh Coronavirus cases

India's Covid-19 situation continues to remain grim. A record single-day rise of around 3.8 lakh cases over the last 24 hours pushed the overall tally to 1,83,76,524 on Thursday, reports India Today.

As per Union health ministry data updated on Thursday morning, India reported 3,79,257 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, ending Thursday morning, while 2,69,507 people recuperated from the disease.

The death toll due to Covid-19, meanwhile, climbed to 2.04 lakh following 3,645 fresh fatalities, the updated data showed. With this, a total of 1,50,86,878 people have recovered in India so far. Active cases in India, meanwhile, stand at 30,84,814 with over 15,00,20,648 vaccinated against the deadly disease.

India, a country of nearly 1.4 billion people, became the fourth nation on Wednesday to crossed 200,000 deaths due to Covid-19 infection, behind the United States, Brazil and Mexico.

On Wednesday, a record single-day rise of 3,60,960 new cases was registered in 24 hours. Maharashtra, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh are among the 10 states that account for 78.53 per cent of the new Covid-19 deaths reported in a day, the Union Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

Maharashtra reported the highest daily new cases at 66,358. It was followed by Uttar Pradesh with 32,921 while Kerala reported 32,819 new cases.

Registration begins for next phase of vaccinations
Amid a surge in coronavirus cases, India on Wednesday began the process to allow all citizens above 18 years of age to get vaccinated from May 1.

The registration of all citizens above 18 years of age for vaccination against Covid-19 started on the CoWIN portal at 4 pm on Wednesday.

Registration for the newly eligible category for Covid-19 vaccination is possible through the CoWIN platform and the Aarogya Setu app.

After registration, taking an appointment to get a Covid-19 vaccine jab would be mandatory for those aged between 18 and 44 years as walk-ins will not be allowed initially, officials had said.

The inoculation process and the documents to be provided to get the jab remain the same.

Those above 45 years of age can still avail the facility of on-site registration to get vaccinated, they had said.

Many people, however, took to social media to complain about the technical problems they faced trying to register themselves for the third phase of the inoculation drive that is scheduled to begin from May 1. Some of them complained that the portal was not responding while others complained that it had crashed.
