Washington DC Mayor extends public emergency for 15 days

The mayor of Washington, D.C. extended the city’s public emergency for 15 more days on Wednesday night in response to the chaotic pro-Trump protests that erupted inside the U.S. Capitol earlier in the day, reports New York Post. 

“They have fired chemical irritants, bricks, bottles, and guns. They have breached the security of the Capitol and their destructive and riotous behavior has the potential to spread beyond the Capitol. Their motivation is ongoing,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a statement.

Bowser also said “some persons” dissatisfied with the certification of the Electoral College votes will continue to protest violently through January 20th, the day President-elect Joe Biden will be inaugurated into office.

Bowser imposed a citywide curfew starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Thursday.
