The number of confirmed cases of the new coronavirus pandemic exceeded 600,000, with deaths over 28,000.

Since it began in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 31 last year, the deadly virus kept spreading to newer countries. As of Saturday, it spread to 199 countries and territories.

The epidemic infected as many as 614,231 people and killed 28,240 globally, according to Worldometer, a website which compiles number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it.

However, some 137,328 patients recovered from the virus, the website said.

Though China, the epicenter of the virus, could succeed in fight against the virus, the virus is now ravaging US and European countries.

Now the worst-hit country is US with highest number of coronavirus cases. It recorded 104,256 cases followed by Italy with 86,498 cases. But the latter has the highest deaths, 9,134.

China is in the second position in the number of cases but it has less deaths number than that of another European country Spain. So far, 5,690 people lost their lives after being infected with coronavirus in the latter.

With soaring cases day by day, other European countries like Germany, France, UK, Switzerland and so on are struggling to stem spread of the virus.

In the Middle East, Iran got hit hard by the virus. The country's tally reached 35,408 with 3,076 new cases. A total of 2,517 people died from the virus.

Some 48 people tested positive for COVID-19 and among them five died since infections of the virus were detected in Bangladesh on March 8.

The deadly virus affected more than 1000 people in South Asian country Pakistan while Bangladesh's neighbour India has over 900 cases.
