6 children killed after car plunges into pond in India
At least six children were killed and one was rescued Tuesday after a car carrying them plunged into a roadside pond in India’s eastern state of Bihar, officials said.
The accident took place at Tarabari area in Araria district, about 380 km northeast of Patna, the capital city of Bihar, according to news agency.
“This morning a car carrying 10 people plunged into a pond after which six children were killed on the spot and one was rescued. He has been hospitalized immediately,” Himanshu Sharma, Araria district magistrate told Xinhua over telephone. “Three people, who were inside the car came out unhurt.”
According to Sharma, people inside the car were returning after attending a marriage ceremony.
“We are being told the driver tried to avoid hitting a child on road but couldn’t control the vehicle and plunged into pond,” he said. “The deaths have taken place because the children couldn’t come out of the submerged vehicle.”
Following the accident, police teams rushed to the spot and retrieved bodies from the car with the help of locals.
