Rohingya issue: TV anchor detained at Myanmar airport
Renowned Pakistani TV anchor Aamir Liaquat Hussain has been detained at Myanmar’s International Airport for unknown reasons, according to Bol TV, reports Daily Pakistan.
Liaquat, who had reportedly travelled to Burma to help out persecuted Rohingya Muslims was taken into custody by immigration authorities without being informed about the reasons for detention, media reports said.
Bol TV has confirmed the detention of the anchor who along with Waqar Zaka was en route to Burma.
However, the chief news officer for Bol News, Faysal Aziz Khan, said that Mr Hussain had been sent to Myanmar to cover the plight of Rohingya Muslims there, reports Pakistan’s oldest daily Dawn.
“[At the airport in Yangon] he was asked about the purpose of his visit and Aamir Liaquat spoke the truth. Since then we have had no contact with him,” Mr Khan said.
He said that Mr Hussain might be deported to Bangkok, where he had boarded the Yangon-bound flight.
