2 arrested over attack on Bangladeshi in New York
Two teens were arrested on Friday for beating a Bangladeshi national and yelling “ISIS” at him on a Bronx street, police said.
Cops arrested a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old for the January 16 attack after the younger boy’s mother heard the boys bragging to their friends about the hate crime, a police source said.
The alarmed mom turned her son into the 43rd Precinct, where he gave up his 15-year-old partner, who was then nabbed at his school Friday morning, officials said.
The suspects — whose names were not released because of their ages — were charged with misdemeanor assault and harassment as a hate crime.
The older teen faces a list of other charges, including acting in a manner injurious to a child.
Majibur Rahman, 43, from Bangladesh was wearing traditional South Asian clothing when he was attacked in front of his horrified 9-year-old niece in Parkchester.
Shouting “ISIS! ISIS!” they allegedly punched the Bangladeshi immigrant until he collapsed, then kicked him.
The arrests are a relief to neighbors in the heavily South Asian enclave, said a local pol.
`The community is happy that the suspects were caught," said state Assemblyman Luis Sepulveda (D – Bronx).
“Now it`s time for healing and praying for these two kids. It`s a sad day in our society when teenagers attack people because of their religious belief."
