Tulip Siddiq says she is ready to defend her seat

Bangladeshi-born British MP (Hampstead and Kilburn constituency) Tulip Siddiq says she is ready to defend her place in parliament after Prime Minister Theresa May called a snap general election.

Tulip is the granddaughter of the father of the nation of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Holding a majority of only 1,138 votes - about two percent - Ms Siddiq and her supporters know that once again the constituency will be targeted by rival parties at the June 8 poll.

But Ms Siddiq said she was ready to stand on her record, as she looks to avoid seeing her time as the MP for the north of the borough cut short after just two years.

“My work over the last two years as the MP for my home seat of Hampstead and Kilburn has been the greatest honour I could have wished for,” said Ms Siddiq. “Local residents have always been at the heart of my work. I have continued the fight against HS2, stood up to devastating cuts to our schools and GP closures, and pushed for greater funding for our NHS.”

She added: “Through the weekly Prime Minister’s Questions, I’ve directly challenged David Cameron and Theresa May more than any other backbench MP in this Parliament, flagging issues like junior doctors contracts, cuts to local authorities, security for EU citizens, women’s equality, hate speech and other local campaigns.”
