Ekramul’s wife threatens defamation suit against Rafi

Director Raihan Rafi’s latest web film, Amalnama, premiered on Charki at 12:01am on March 12, igniting a firestorm online. While some laud its gritty narrative, others insist it mirrors the real-life murder of Teknaf’s former councillor, Mohammad Ekramul Haque.
Now, the late councilor’s widow, Ayesha Begum, has stepped into the fray, threatening defamation lawsuits against Rafi and Prothom Alo for linking the film to her husband’s story.
In a fiery Facebook post accompanying a Prothom Alo news card, Ayesha Begum lashed out: “Rafi claims Amalnama is fiction, crafted from his imagination, not tied to any real event. Yet you’re shaming us, calling it my husband’s tale. Ekramul was no drug dealer—he fought against drugs and was brutally murdered in a planned attack. Today, you’re twisting this film into his truth.”
She issued an ultimatum: “If Rafi says this is Ekramul’s story, I’ll file a defamation case. I demand he publicly clarify it’s unrelated.”
Ayesha didn’t stop at Rafi. She turned her ire on Prothom Alo, accusing the outlet of amplifying the narrative: “You’ve branded this as Ekramul’s real story, humiliating me and my two daughters before the nation. Everyone knows he was innocent, killed unjustly for opposing drugs. Admit your mistake—or we’ll sue. Say it now: this has no link to Ekramul Haque.”
Amalnama, starring Tama Mirza as Parveen alongside Zahid Hasan, Gazi Raqayet, Sarika Sabrin, and Hasnat Ripon, has sparked debate for its dark themes.
Rafi maintains it’s a work of fiction, but parallels drawn to Ekramul’s 2018 killing—widely covered as a controversial extrajudicial death—have fuelled speculation and outrage.
For Ayesha, this isn’t just about a movie—it’s personal. Her post reflects a widow’s resolve to protect her husband’s legacy and shield her daughters from public scorn. As the online buzz grows, her legal threat looms over Rafi and Prothom Alo, testing the line between art and accountability. Will clarifications come, or will courts decide?
