Under the "Remembering Monsoon Revolution" initiative by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, eight filmmakers have been selected to lead workshops and produce medium-length films inspired by the July Uprising.

These workshops will take place across eight divisions of the country in 2025, engaging young talents in film production.

The announcement was made on Tuesday (January 7) at a press conference held in the Ministry’s Secretariat.

Sumon Rahman, a member of the selection committee, revealed the names of the chosen directors: Anam Biswas, Humaira Bilkis, Shankha Dasgupta, Shaheen Dil Riaz, Rabiul Alam Robi, Tasmiah Afrin Mou, and Md Tawkir Islam.

Explaining the initiative’s vision, Sumon Rahman said, “This programme aims to achieve two key goals. First, to connect aspiring filmmakers from within and beyond Dhaka to the filmmaking process, equipping them with skills and opportunities to grow. Second, to utilize their newfound expertise by involving them in the production of meaningful films.”

The workshops and films are expected to embody creativity and artistic commentary while reflecting the spirit of the post-revolution era. Rahman emphasized the importance of fostering revolutionary and youthful narratives in the creative process.

Mostafa Sarwar Farooki, adviser to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, highlighted the significance of the project, stating, “These eight filmmakers carry the weight of national expectations. They have complete creative freedom to explore compelling and innovative stories, steering away from bureaucratic constraints.”

Farooki stressed that the government’s full financial support would ensure these films achieve high standards of quality and creativity. He added, “These films must pave the way for future projects, offering a fresh perspective on artistic culture in this post-revolutionary period.”

The programme will invite applicants for the workshops through an online application form. Directors assigned to each division will select the participants. Film production is expected to conclude by June, ensuring the timely delivery of this ambitious initiative.

This project is anticipated to not only commemorate the July Uprising but also create a platform for emerging filmmakers to contribute to the nation’s evolving cinematic landscape.
