HC order staying trial of Nawshaba upheld

The Supreme Court has upheld a High Court (HC) order that stayed the trial proceedings of a case lodged against actress Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed on charge of spreading rumours on social media during student movement for safe road last year.

The five-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on Sunday passed the order after hearing on a petition filed by the prosecution seeking stay on the HC order.

Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua tood for Nawshaba in today's hearing while deputy attorney general Biswajit Debnath for prosecution.

The High Court on November 20 stayed trial proceedings of the case filed against the actress, Nwashaba, who is now on bail, for six months.

Actress Qazi Nawshaba was detained from city's Uttara house on August 4 last year for spreading rumour on facebook about attacks on student protesters at Jigatala.

Following the day, a case was registered against her with Uttara West Police Station in this connection under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.
