Actress Rani Sarkar dies

Rani Sarkar, a veteran actress of Bangladeshi films, has died of old age complications at the age of 86 at a private hospital in Dhaka where she was undergoing treatment.

She breathed her last at 4am in the morning on Saturday, General Secretary of Bangladesh Chalacchitra Shilpi Samity (Bangladesh Film Artistes’ Association) Zayed Khan said.

Rani Sarker started her acting career in Bengali cinema in the sixties decade. 

In 2014, she was awarded National Film Awards for Lifetime Achievement Awards for her outstanding contribution in Bengali films.

Rani Sarkar first acted in a film titled ‘Dur Hain Sukh Ka Gaow’ in 1958, which was directed by AJ Karadar. 

Then she acted in the film ‘Chanda’, where she played the role of Shabnam’s mother. She has appeared in over 300 films and some of the notable titles are ‘Talaash’, ‘Bandhon’, ‘Sangam’, ‘Ish Darti Par’, ‘Paiose’, ‘Kaise Kahu’, ‘Azan’, ‘Kacher Deyal’, ‘Kach Kata Hire’, ‘Behula’, ‘Anowara’, ‘Chhoddobeshi’, ‘Bhawal Sannyasi’ ‘Titas Ekti Nadir Naam’, ‘Chandranath’, ‘Shubhoda’, ‘Devdas’, among others. 

Rani Sarkar was born on Sonatola village of Kaliganj thana of Satkhira district of Khulna Division in Bangladesh.
