Children’s TV will entertain children, educate parents: Inu

Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, MP, today said that television was a great medium to acculturate children.

The minister was speaking as the chief guest at a program marking the launching of Duranta TV - a specialized channel for children.

Cultural Minister Asaduzzaman Noor, State Ministers for Post and Telecommunication Tarana Halim and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam spoke on the occasion.

Inu further said TV could teach children to be patriotic and creative, while parents could learn how to guide their children.

He also said that foreign channels lack cultural-sensitivity and distorts children's perception.

Inu said there was a great demand for children's programs but it was expensive. He appealed to potential advertisers and sponsors to be generous with the children's TV channel.

He also felt that there was a need for more specialized channels particularly on sports, health and education.

Speaking on the occasion Noor appreciated the new venture and said it would be a great contribution to acculturate the country's children.

Tarana Halim said the gathering that foreign TV channels were changing the lifestyle and language of the younger generation.

She felt that a local channel could contribute significantly to reverse the trend.

Shahriar Alam explained the challenges of building up a specialized TV channel. He described the trend as "eduentertainment".

DURANTA TV will telecast their programs from today. Its program will initially be telecast for Dhaka, while the rest of the country can watch it from October 15.
