Oscars 2017: Best dressed on the red carpet
Ruth Negga

The stars are arriving for the 89th Academy Awards with Jimmy Kimmel serving as host and, while the night is all about celebrating the best in the movie industry, the dresses often take centre stage.

The red carpet arrival moment has become a global platform for designers to parade their finest frocks on some of the world’s most high profile women and with the likes of Emma Stone, Ruth Negga, Michelle Williams and Meryl Streep in attendance, you can expect to see some incredible looks.

As the final stop on the awards circuit and, arguably, the most coveted among the fashion crowd, we wonder who will have the look that everyone is talking about for days, weeks, and years to come?

Emma Stone
Perhaps the most anticipated look of the evening, we’ve been counting down the days to see what the La La Land actress would wear for her Best Actress nomination and she didn’t disappoint. Resembling an actual Oscar, Stone wore a dazzling gold Givenchy Hate couture gown finished with Twenties flapper girl fringing, Hollywood waves and a striking red lip.

Ruth Negga
Every year, the fashion world falls in love with a leading lady and this year, that’s Ruth Negga. Starting on a fashion high, the undisputed star of the 2017 red carpet season, stunned in a high-neck, long sleeved red custom Valentino gown accessorised with an Irene Neuwirth crown and earrings covered in Gemfields rubies. She also offered up our first slice of political commentary sporting a blue American Civil Liberties Union ribbon.

Isabelle Huppert
Nominated for Best Actress for her role in Elle, Isabelle Huppert dazzled on the red carpet in a long sleeve, embellished off-white gown designed by Armani Prive. It’s classic and super sparkly, everything you’d expect from an Oscars frock but it’s elevated with the addition of dark nails and lips and and a bejewelled Repossi ear crawler.

Ryan Gosling
It’s not all about embellished frocks you know. Ryan Gosling stormed the red carpet in a fitted, contemporary Gucci black tuxedo, bowtie and monochromatic ruffled shirt. Not completely ignoring tradition but distinctive enough for us. If anyone can pull of ruffles, it’s Ryan.

karlie-kloss

Karlie Kloss
Sporting a floor-length, all-white Stella McCartney dress, supermodel Karlie Kloss was embracing major Old Hollywood vibes with an oversized diamond choker and chic, wavy bob to boot. The dress came fitted with asymmetric sleeves and a built-in cape but it was the addition of a royal blue ribbon in honour of the ACLU that really caught our attention.

Emma Roberts
Actress Emma Roberts made a sustainable fashion choice for the Academy Awards this year as part of the Red Dress Green Carpet initiative. The Vintage Armani Prive dress was from the brand’s 2005 collection and features a two-tiered skirt, dramatic plunging bodice with black crystal embellishment and a black sating cumberband.

hailee-sienfield

Hailee Steinfeld
Best known for her roles in Pitch Perfect and True Grit, actress Hailee Steinfield chose an exquisite Ralph & Russi gown for her appearance at the 89th Academy Awards. Crafted from grey silk organza and finished with 3D floral applique and crystal embellishment this gown made a serious impact.
