DU to offer female students Tk 3,000 as ‘housing assistance’

Dhaka University has announced plans to provide temporary housing assistance to female students eligible for hall accommodation but unable to secure seats due to a shortage.

The announcement was made at a press conference held at the Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom on Wednesday, January 15, at 2:30 pm. Present at the event were Pro-VC (Administration) Professor Dr Saima Haque Bidisha, Treasurer Professor Dr Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed, and provosts of the halls of female students.

Addressing the accommodation crisis

Treasurer Dr Jahangir Alam Chowdhury acknowledged the current challenges in providing adequate housing for female students but assured efforts are underway to implement temporary solutions.

“We are introducing bunk beds in existing halls to maximize capacity,” Dr. Chowdhury said. “Additionally, we are launching a housing assistance program funded through external contributions beyond the university's budget.”

Financial assistance for students

Eligible female students unable to secure hall accommodation will receive a monthly stipend of Tk 3,000 to support their housing needs. According to Dr Chowdhury, the process to implement this initiative has already begun.

“We have requested interested students to apply, and once the applications are reviewed, we will begin providing the assistance,” he explained.
