UGC to be university commission: Shafiqul

Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam on Tuesday said the government will rename the University Grants Commission, UGC, into the University Commission.

"There is the University Grants Commission. It will be made into the University Commission dropping the word "grants". There will be a big work over it," he told a press briefing at Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka this evening.

Mentioning that there are many public and private universities in the country, Alam said the University Commission will be formed to ensure the standard of tertiary education.

He said the University Commission will work to upgrade the tertiary education into international standard and expand research works.

To make school curriculum up-to-date, the press secretary said, textbooks of class IX-X will be rationalised.

He said the government will take measures to provide training to the teachers of non-government schools as they do not get enough scopes of training like the government school teachers.

Alam said the "trade" in education sector regarding promotion and transfer of teachers and staff has been identified. "We will work on this issue so that the education sector could be made corruption-free," he added.
