DUCSU elections likely in February
The Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) elections are expected to take place by late January or early February next year.
Dhaka University Proctor Dr Saifuddin Ahmed shared this information during a press briefing at the university's Proctor's Office on Sunday (December 8).
When asked about the elections, Dr Saifuddin Ahmed emphasised their importance in fostering student engagement and communication. "DUCSU elections are crucial for us as they simplify the process of understanding students' opinions," he said.
However, he acknowledged several obstacles, particularly regarding the need for constitutional reforms within DUCSU.
Some of the challenges raised by student organizations include:
Reform of DUCSU charter: Objections have been raised over the current structure.
Vice-Chancellor's Role: Debate continues over whether the Vice-Chancellor should serve as DUCSU's president.
Student Restrictions: Complaints include limitations on slogans, posters, and other traditional campaign activities.
Despite these challenges, Dr. Ahmed reaffirmed the administration's intent to proceed with the elections. "We aim to organise DUCSU by late January or early February, overcoming the existing barriers," he stated.
If held, these elections will be a significant step toward revitalizing the student body’s representation and fostering dialogue between students and the administration.
