7 college students call off protests on assurance
The students from seven colleges affiliated to Dhaka University, DU, have postponed their movement after getting assurance from Education Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud.
They made the announcement in a press conference at Dhaka College on Wednesday afternoon.
In the press conference, Dhaka College student Naim Hawladar said student representatives from seven colleges met the adviser today in his invitation and he assured of ensuring an ‘independent identity’ for the colleges.
“The adviser assured us will scrap seven colleges’ affiliation with DU as per students’ demand. A new ‘independent identity’ will be created for seven college students,” Naim said.
However, the committee formed by the Education Ministry and an expert team will determine in which process making this identity is possible, he said.
“For this, the adviser sought time. In the period, he will inspect the campuses of seven colleges and assured us of including student representatives to the committee formed by the ministry,” Naim said.
“We, the student representatives, are satisfied to Education Adviser’s assurance. So, we decided to postpone our ongoing movement-programme,” he added.
The students from seven colleges affiliated to Dhaka University have been protesting in Dhaka for the last couple of days, demanding the cancellation of the affiliation with DU and establishment of an independent public university.
