Legal notice seeks FFs’ grandchildren, ward quotas be scrapped in DU

A legal notice has been served on the Dhaka University, DU, authorities to cancel the freedom fighters’ grandchildren, ward, and sports quotas in the institution’s 2024-25 academic year.

The university, its vice-chancellor (VC), pro-VC (administration), pro-VC (education), and registrar have been made respondents to the notice sent by Supreme Court lawyer barrister Solaiman Tushar on Tuesday.

All except 5 per cent quota for the children of the freedom fighters, martyred freedom fighters and Birangana, one per cent for ethnic minority and one per cent for physically challenged and third gender will have to be scrapped, the notice said.

If the authorities concerned do not take any step in this regard within five days upon receiving the notice, a writ petition will be filed with the Supreme Court, according to the notice.
