Flood affects 2799 primary schools

The recent floods in the country's 11 districts have damaged infrastructure, furniture, and textbooks in 2,799 government primary schools.

Of the affected schools, 763 are in Noakhali, 550 in Feni, 523 in Cumilla, 501 in Lakshmipur, 169 in Chandpur, 164 in Chattogram, 77 in Moulvibazar, 22 in Brahmanbaria, 22 in Habiganj and eight in Sylhet.

Around Tk 33 crore is primarily required to repair the institutions and it would be adjusted from the Primary Education Directorate, said Primary and Mass Education Adviser Bidhan Chandra Roy Podder.

He provided the information in a meeting titled 'Assessing the losses to the primary education sector in recent flood and what to do' held at the Primary and Mass Education Ministry on Tuesday.

Emphasising that the post-flood rehabilitation works must be done on an emergency basis, the adviser said, "We will be able to fulfill the goal if we all work together."

The meeting, however, decided that the Local Government Engineering Department, the Public Health Engineering Department, the Upazila Engineering Office, and the Upazila Education Office would assess the losses to the government primary schools because of the flood in a coordinated way.
